[19] Ricky Hatton on Rooney carrying belt
Tuesday, June 26, 2007

“I was having a bit of a gamble when I got back to the hotel after the fight and Wayne was sat next to me. He said ‘Thanks for tonight, Ricky. Ultimately, I am a fan of yours. It has been a real inspiration’. Then when I asked him what he felt like in the tunnel beforehand, he admitted ‘My a**e was going like mad waiting there behind you’. The TV girl started counting us down to go on the ring walk. 10-9-8 and I looked over my shoulder. Wayne was going ‘Phewww. Phewww. Phewww’. I said ‘F***ing hell, Wayne. You’re not fighting, I am! It took a lot of bottle by Wayne to do the ring walk with Blue Moon blaring out. But I think, ultimately, he didn’t give a monkey’s about what fans might have said. As it turned out, City fans who back me did not give him a hard time or turn on him. But it wasn’t only about Wayne. There were other footballers. I thought half the Premiership were there. When they come to the boxing, for these footballers it seems as if a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. Footballers seem hard to get to back home, probably the hardest sportsmen to get near. But every way you turned at the after-fight party, you seemed to be sitting next to one. I don’t have a VIP area at those gatherings. It would mean alienating myself from my fans. I know it means a lot to those who pay good money to come along to say they had a chat with Wayne or Rio or Joe Cole. And it doesn’t happen back home. Wayne even went into the Castillo dressing room to wish him all the best. He and his kids are big United fans. I’m told they asked him to sign the kids’ shirts, then all of a sudden there was a massive crowd around him. They were absolutely amazed by him. Meanwhile, I’m in my dressing room, screaming and shouting with the Oasis music blaring and punching the walls winding myself up. When I turned around, Castillo’s kids were standing there looking at me with Manchester United shirts on! Cheeky beggars. I don’t know how they got there but they came up and wished me good luck. That was a first, the opponents’ kids wishing me good luck.”
